Date of Birth: April 10, 1957

Parents: Jewel Moon (Née Barbara Baskin) from a suburb of Boston and Andrew MacKinnon of St. Ann's Bay.

Childhood and adolescence:

When Scotia was five, Jewel Moon departed St. Ann's Bay, leaving her young daughter in the care of her Grandmother Jessica. Scotia's father and grandfather were commercial fisherman; both were lost at sea in a fierce winter storm off the Grand Banks. When Scotia's grandmother died, after a very brief sojourn with a great aunt, Scotia was sent to San Francisco to live with her mother, who was residing in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district with her significant other, an Italian artist named Giovanni.

San Francisco State University, Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice;
Police Academy, San Diego, California

Work History
San Diego Police Department: Patrolman; Detective-Domestic Relations; Harbor Patrol; H & W Security, San Francisco; Washington State licensed Private Investigator. Her office is located on the second floor of the historic Old Gazette Building on Guard Street, Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington.

Family History: Scotia's first husband was Simon Butler, a fellow student at S. F. State University. They had one daughter, Melissa Marie. When Melissa was four, Simon departed for a dive expedition to the Seychelle islands where he discovered a new life and a new love, and divorced Scotia. During her tenure at San Diego P.D., Scotia married Pete Santana, a narcotics detective who was killed in a drug shootout. Scotia subsequently married a San Francisco stock broker named Albert who was lost in a storm while sailing in the South Pacific.

Melissa is a college student at St. Mary's College in California. Her course of study varies from time to time. She is currently majoring in Political Science.

Jewel Moon lives with Giovanni in the village of Mendocino, on the Northern California coast.

Current domicile: Scotia lives aboard her sailboat, DragonSpray, at slip G-73 at the Port of Friday Harbor. When she's not solving a new case, she cruises in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia and the Strait of Georgia aboard DragonSpray with her significant other, Nicholas Anastazi, a maritime attorney who lives in Seattle. She also single-hands DragonSpray from time to time, and occasionally participates in local sailing races held by the Griffin Bay Yacht Club of which she is a recent member.
